Egypt’s Suez Canal explores partnership with UW Grp

Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) is studying a potential partnership with Cyprus-based UW Group to transform Port Said Shipyard into a world-class centre for shipbuilding, repair, and green scrapping services, SCA Chairman Osama Rabie said on Wednesday.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Rabie met with a senior delegation from UW Group to explore opportunities for future cooperation. Discussions focused on enhancing the shipyard’s competitiveness and attracting foreign investment to support its development into a modern facility offering high-quality marine services.

Rabie stressed that the potential partnership aligns with the SCA’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams by maximising asset utilisation and upgrading marine and logistics services. He added that the Canal aims to establish itself as a global hub for shipbuilding, maintenance, spare parts supply, and sustainable maritime solutions.

As part of ongoing development plans, Rabie also noted the introduction of new services such as container repair and eco-friendly ship recycling using advanced systems to expand the shipyard’s capabilities and attract international clients.

The visiting delegation highlighted Port Said Shipyard’s potential as a regional hub for environmentally friendly ship repair, citing its strategic location and strong infrastructure. They proposed collaboration in automation, workforce development, and environmental compliance to support the SCA’s green transition. Both sides agreed to continue studying the proposal and hold follow-up meetings to examine its technical and economic dimensions.

Founded in 2000, UW Group specialises in certified maintenance and repair services for major global shipping companies, conducting around 240 operations annually and serving more than 300 clients worldwide.
