Egypt’s Suez Methanol derivatives project hits 71% completion, production set for 2026
Egypt’s Suez Methanol Derivatives Project in Damietta has reached roughly 71 per cent completion, with commercial production targeted by June 2026, the ministry of petroleum said on Thursday.
The project, led by the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), aims to produce 140,000 tons annually of formaldehyde-based products, including urea-formaldehyde and naphthalene-formaldehyde. These materials are used in fertilisers, adhesives, MDF wood panels, and concrete additives.
ECHEM Chairman Ibrahim Mekki conducted an on-site inspection as part of directives from Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy to ensure regular follow-up on ongoing projects to maximise progress and address challenges. Officials from the Suez Methanol Derivatives Company, project contractor SAN Egypt, and consulting firm ENPPI accompanied Mekki.
Mekki praised the project team for their efforts and emphasised accelerating the schedule while maintaining safety standards. “All necessary support will be provided to complete the project as quickly as possible,” he said.
The initiative forms part of Egypt’s wider strategy to expand its petrochemical sector and boost downstream industrial output to support economic growth.
