IMF delegation praises Suez Canal as key to global supply chains

A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) visited the Suez Canal on Monday, emphasising its strategic importance to international shipping and praising the authority’s efforts to maintain efficiency and manage crises, a statement from the canal’s authority said.

Ivanna Vladkova Hollar, IMF Mission Chief for Egypt, said the canal’s advanced navigational and logistical services, combined with its ability to save significant time and distance for shipping, make it a central element of global supply chains. She also highlighted the authority’s ongoing improvements in service efficiency and client communication, which help sustain navigation and support stability in the Red Sea.

The delegation toured the Maritime Training and Simulation Academy, observed a maritime training exercise, visited the Suez Canal Museum, took a boat tour along the New Suez Canal, and inspected the Suez Canal Marina in Ismailia.

Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, met with the IMF team, which included Ashraf Atwa, deputy chairman, Yasser Sobhy, deputy finance minister for fiscal policy, as well as board members of the canal authority and representatives from the Ministry of Finance.

The visit, part of the IMF mission’s official trip to Egypt, underscores ongoing collaboration between the Suez Canal Authority and the Ministry of Finance.
