APPO appoints Farid Ghezali as new Secretary General

The African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) appointed Farid Ghezali as its new Secretary General on Wednesday, succeeding Omar Farouk Ibrahim in a handover ceremony in the Republic of Congo.

Ghezali’s three-year term, running from 4 January 2026 to 4 January 2029, was confirmed by the 48th Ordinary Session of the APPO Ministerial Council held in Brazzaville on 4 November 2025.

During the ceremony, outgoing Secretary General Ibrahim reflected on his six-year tenure, highlighting APPO’s achievements from 2020 to 2025 and expressing gratitude to the Ministerial Council, the Executive Board, and APPO staff for their support.

Founded in 1987 in Lagos, Nigeria, APPO is an intergovernmental body that promotes cooperation, knowledge sharing, and partnerships among African oil-producing countries. The organisation leverages hydrocarbons to enhance energy security, sustainable development, and economic diversification across the continent.
