Egypt, South Korea sign customs IT pact to cut clearance times, boost e-commerce
Egypt’s Customs Authority (ECA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with its South Korean counterpart to upgrade information technology systems, support e-commerce, and reduce customs clearance times, the authority said Tuesday.
The agreement is part of Egypt’s broader push to modernise its customs framework and accelerate digital transformation.
Under the MoU, the ECA and Korean Customs Service (KCS) will cooperate on developing information and communications technology systems, facilitating and securing trade flows, and aligning Egypt’s e-commerce ecosystem with international standards. The partnership also includes capacity-building programmes for customs staff and support for integrated logistics systems for express mail shipments.
ECA Chairman Ahmed Amawi said the deal would help raise the efficiency of the customs system, improve services for the business community, and shorten clearance times, contributing to a more competitive business environment.
Egypt also aims to benefit from South Korea’s technological expertise in smart systems, e-commerce and modern logistics, he added.
For his part, KCS Commissioner Lee Myung-koo said South Korea looks forward to exchanging technical and technological expertise with Egypt to support digital transformation and the growth of e-commerce, praising Egypt’s recent efforts to modernise its customs operations.
