Egypt, Oman explore new maritime route, logistics hubs to boost trade

Egypt and Oman have agreed to explore a new maritime shipping line and establish logistics zones to strengthen trade and transport links between the two countries, the Egyptian transport ministry said Wednesday.

The announcement came at the conclusion of a visit by Egypt’s Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir to Muscat for the Egyptian-Omani Business Forum, where he met with Oman’s Transport, Communications and IT Minister Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali. The discussions focused on joint infrastructure projects, including port development and logistics corridors.

Both sides emphasised the strategic importance of a maritime route connecting Egypt’s Port of Sokhna with Oman’s Port of Salalah. Logistics zones are planned at both ports to facilitate the movement of goods between the countries and neighbouring regions. Egypt intends to deploy four vessels, including bulk, container, Ro-Ro, and Ro-Pax ships, on the planned route as part of its plan to expand the national commercial fleet.

The ministers also discussed opportunities for Egyptian companies to participate in Omani infrastructure projects, including airport and port development and Muscat’s metro system. A joint committee will be formed to study and implement the proposals, aiming to accelerate transport cooperation and economic ties between the two nations.
