Egypt invests EGP26.5b to upgrade power grid as generation rises 5%

Egypt invested 26.5 billion Egyptian pounds in electricity transmission projects in 2024/2025, boosting generated power by 5 per cent to 240,000 gigawatt-hours, Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said on Monday.

Speaking at the General Assembly of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), Esmat said the ministry is working to ensure electricity supply with quality, continuity, and stability. “We continue to expand and modernize the transmission network to absorb new capacities from renewable energy, including building new lines, reinforcing existing ones, and upgrading transformer substations,” he said.

Esmat added that Egypt is transitioning from a conventional grid to a smart grid capable of handling large renewable energy inputs while reducing losses and improving efficiency. The energy transition strategy runs alongside plans to enhance grid performance, lower fuel consumption, and maintain reliable power supply.

Mona Rizk, EETC Chair, said the company completed planned projects in 2024/2025 with investments totaling about 26.3 billion pounds. These included replacing and renewing extra-high and high-voltage lines and substations, completing new expansions, and finalizing major transmission infrastructure. The grid now comprises 819 substations with 230,000 MVA capacity and 61,000 kilometers of lines.

Renewable energy—including wind, solar, hydropower, and battery storage—currently accounts for around 14 per cent of total grid capacity, with a target of 42 per cent by 2030, Rizk said. She also highlighted regional interconnection projects with Jordan, Libya, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and ongoing work with Greece and Italy, as Egypt aims to become a regional energy hub.

Rizk noted that continuous maintenance programs, upgraded protection systems, a new national control centre in the New Capital, and digital transformation initiatives are helping streamline operations and improve efficiency.
