Egypt, represented by Islam Azzam, chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA), has been elected chair of the Growth and Emerging Markets Committee (GEMC) of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) for the 2026–2028 term.
Azzam will also serve as vice chair of the IOSCO Board for the next two years, alongside his role as GEMC chair.
The FRA said the appointments reflect Egypt’s growing role in international securities market regulation.
The GEMC is IOSCO’s largest committee, representing more than 75 per cent of its membership. It brings together 94 members and 23 associate non-voting members, including several G20 economies. The committee focuses on improving market efficiency, developing regulatory standards, facilitating information exchange, and providing technical assistance and training to members.
The FRA said the development comes amid its ongoing efforts to modernise Egypt’s capital markets, promote financial innovation and digital transformation, and support sustainable finance, in line with international standards.
