Egypt signs MoU for dry bulk terminal at El Max Port

Egypt’s Alexandria Port Authority signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China’s Xiamen C&D Inc. to establish an industrial dry bulk cargo terminal at El Max Port, as part of the development of Greater Alexandria Port.

The terminal is the first of four terminals under development at El Max Port, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to develop Egyptian ports, attract foreign investment and expand private-sector partnerships to support the national economy and boost export competitiveness.

According to the Ministry of Transport statement, the project will include two main berths capable of accommodating giant cargo vessels, alongside storage yards, silos and advanced cargo-handling facilities. Upon completion, the terminal will be able to accommodate three giant vessels simultaneously.

The development plan also includes expandable storage yards, a logistics centre to facilitate truck movements and improved connections to the national railway network, integrating maritime, rail and road transport to enhance cargo movement to industrial zones and production and consumption centres.

The project will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation across transport, logistics, storage and supporting industrial services. It will also help reduce supply chain costs, improve the transportation of raw materials and finished products, and strengthen export competitiveness, particularly in the cement, steel and heavy industries sectors.
