Egypt’s interim President Adly Mansour appointed Youssef Dagger on Tuesday to the 50-committee tasked with amending the 2012 constitution, as a representative of farmers’ syndicates.
Dagger succeeds Mohamed Abdel-Kader, who died a few days ago.
The 2012 constitution was suspended as part of a roadmap for Egypt’s future following the deposition of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the armed forces amid mass popular protests against his rule.
Egypt’s non-Islamist political forces have repeatedly argued the suspended constitution was not representative of all sectors of society and limited many freedoms, blaming the majority Islamist members of the outgoing constituent assembly for ignoring their recommendations.
