The preliminary count of Egyptian expat votes at embassies across the world from Thursday up until Sunday at 5:30pm has exceeded 265,000, according to Egypt’s foreign ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Aty.
According to an earlier statement by Abdel Aty, the turnout so far is almost double that of January’s constitutional referendum.
On Saturday, the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) announced that voting for Egyptian expats has been extended for 24 hours to allow Egyptians abroad to vote until Monday, 19 May at 9pm.
Expat voting, which started on Thursday, was scheduled to end on Sunday.
Meanwhile, voting inside Egypt will take place on 26-27 May.
This year’s election features only two candidates: ex-defence minister Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.
