Train fire in 3 carriages kills one in Nile Delta

In a new train tragedy in Egyp, a huge fire on a train in Sharqiya has left one dead, railway authority head Samir Nawar told Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

The damaged train, number 280, travels on the Ismailia-Zagazig line.

Nawar said the fire, which took place on Monday morning, was brought under control within 50 minutes.

The three carriages that caught fire were separated from the rest of the train to prevent the blaze from spreading, he added.

An aging railway system, with successive government failing to upgrade carriages and security procedures, have resulted in hundreds of railway disasters in the last 20 years leaving thousands dead.
