Unknown assailants late on Tuesday shot dead an on-duty police officer in the Mediterranean province of Marsa Matrouh, about 175km west of Alexandria, the interior ministry said.
Attackers opened fire after being stopped for check while police were inspecting a corpse found in Al-Alameen area, a ministry spokesman said in a statement.
The officer was killed and another policeman wounded in the shooting. Attacks on security forces have become a regular occurrence since the 2013 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi, amid a burgeoning Islamist insurgency.
The deadliest attacks have taken place in the Sinai region but smaller-scale bombings and drive-by shootings are increasingly common in other parts of the country, including the capital Cairo.
