Assassination Attempt On Retired General Sami Anan Fails: Office

Former chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces Sami Anan was targeted by an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Monday, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

Unknown assailants opened fire at him while he was in Cairo’s Dokki district. According to Al-Ahram, Anan’s office released a statement saying that he survived the attempt unscathed, and is in good condition.

Anan was chief of staff from 2005 under former president Hosni Mubarak until 2012, when he was forced to retire from his post by ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

Anan briefly served as Morsi’s consultant, but resigned on 2 July 2013, two days before Morsi’s ouster after mass protests against his rule.

At the time of his resignation, he declared his support for anti-Morsi protesters.

Anan is rumoured to be planning to run for president in the coming elections, scheduled for spring. He has yet to make an official announcement, however.
