Celebrating Van Gogh’s 170th birthday

Vincent Van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter who became posthumously famous and most influential figure in Western art history.

Van Gogh produced more than 900 paintings including sketches, with an average of 1 painting every 36 hours.

He is mostly known for his self-portraits, because he did not have money to pay for models, so he became his own model.

He believed The Starry Night, his most famous painting, to be no good. According to his letters to his brother, Theo, he believed that the majority of his paintings were a failure.

According to some sources, it is believed that he only sold one painting in his lifetime.

In 1888, Van Gogh had a heated argument with fellow painter Paul Gaugin at the Yellow House in Arles, where Van Gogh ended up cutting off his own ear.

The Starry Night

After the incident, Van Gogh admitted himself to the Sain-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. He spent a year in the psychiatric hospital where he produced many of his paintings, including The Starry Night, which depicted the night view from his hospital window.

Van Gogh died on the 29th of July 1890 at the age of 37, after he was shot in what is believed by many to be a mystery.
