Communication, Interior Ministries to Face Cables Theft

Ministry of  Communications and Information Technology and Ministry of Interior have formed a security committee for combating the theft of cables, particularly  in governorates.

Eng. Hany Mahmoud, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, stated that cooperation between the two ministries aim at defining the governorates and areas that are most vulnerable to cable theft. He pointed out that the committee has set a comprehensive plan for curbing the  frequent theft of cables that lowers the quality of the service provided to the final user.

In addition to the role played by the committee in handling this problem, Telecom Egypt has also decided to replace copper cables with fiber ones, he said.

The losses incurred by Telecom Egypt due to the theft of cables have reached about EGP 100 million. The company has also finalized the installation of 150 units at the level of the Republic, in the framework of a plan targeting a 30.000 km-length terrestrial network.
