EBRD funds €25.1m solar project in Bosnia, Herzegovina

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced on Wednesday a €25.1 million loan to Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH), the largest public electricity utility in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The loan is for developing a 50 MWp solar power plant on a former coal ash landfill in Gračanica, with UniCredit Bank d.d. contributing an additional €15 million.

The project will develop and operate two adjacent solar power plants, the largest solar initiative by EPBiH.

It marks a significant step in the company’s shift towards renewable energy, with the EBRD also supporting a 2050 decarbonisation plan and new educational standards in renewable energy.

Austria is providing technical support through the Austrian Municipal Infrastructure Fund, while additional funds come from the EBRD’s Shareholder Special Fund.

This project supports Bosnia and Herzegovina’s goal of reaching a 43.6 per cent renewable energy share by 2030. To date, the EBRD has invested over €3.2 billion in 233 projects in the country, focusing on green economy promotion and regional integration.
