Egypt Cabinet approves national council for green hydrogen, derivatives

Egypt said on Wednesday it would form the national council for green hydrogen and its derivatives to be headed by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly.

The decision was approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Madbouly. The National Council for Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives will include as members the electricity and renewable energy minister as well as the ministers of petroleum, justice, planning and economic development, finance, environment, housing, transport, trade and industry, irrigation, and military production. It will also include as members heads of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) as well as the first assistant to the prime minister.

The new council aims to unify the state efforts to incentivise investments and projects in green hydrogen and its derivatives in Egypt in accordance with Egypt 2030 sustainable development strategy goals.

It will be responsible for following up the implementation of the national green hydrogen strategy, endorsing policies and mechanisms, collaborating with the state ministries and government bodies, devising solutions to overcome the barriers to transition green hydrogen

from a niche player to a widespread energy carrier. The council will be also work on revising the current legislations to allure more green hydrogen investments to the country.
