Egypt eyes wheat-for-fertiliser deal with India’s Sun Group to boost ties

Egypt and India are exploring a reciprocal trade arrangement that would see Indian wheat exchanged for Egyptian fertilisers, Egypt’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty and Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Chairman of India’s Sun Group, which specialises in fertilisers and fertiliser raw materials.

Abdel-Atty said the initiative could strengthen food security cooperation and promote industrial integration between the two countries. He added that Egypt is keen to deepen trade and investment ties with India, particularly in the production and export of phosphate and fertilisers.

The minister also welcomed increased Indian investment in Egypt’s industrial sectors, saying the government is committed to creating a more competitive and transparent investment climate through streamlined procedures, clear regulations, and institutional support.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s determination to remove obstacles facing investors and to empower the private sector as a key partner in driving sustainable economic development.
