Egypt launches Wi-Fi Calling to revolutionise mobile connectivity in weak coverage areas
Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat announced on Monday the launch of Wi-Fi Calling in Egypt, a breakthrough service designed to improve mobile communication in areas with poor network coverage. The service was officially unveiled during a signing ceremony between the country’s telecoms regulator, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and leading telecom providers; Telecom Egypt, Orange Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, and Etisalat by e&.
Wi-Fi Calling enables users to make high-quality voice calls using Wi-Fi networks, offering a solution for connectivity issues in high-rise buildings and densely populated areas. Importantly, the service operates under existing mobile plans without additional fees and can be easily activated through mobile settings.
Minister Talaat emphasised that the move is a result of a year-long collaboration with telecom operators to deliver reliable coverage in hard-to-reach locations.
This milestone reflects the government’s commitment to improving telecom services nationwide, the minister said, noting that more than 3,000 mobile towers were constructed in 2024. By mid-2025, the government aims to achieve full mobile coverage for all newly built highways and villages under Hayah Karima (Decent Life) Initiative.
Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of the NTRA, highlighted the transformative potential of Wi-Fi Calling, noting the new service elevates communication quality, especially in indoor areas where coverage is weak, while aligning with global telecom advancements.
The NTRA has recently introduced cutting-edge technologies, including 5G services and embedded SIM (eSIM) technology, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance user experiences and drive digital transformation. Regulatory measures have also been tightened, with doubled financial penalties for operators failing to meet quality standards, ensuring better service delivery across Egypt, Shamroukh added.
The Wi-Fi Calling service marks a significant step forward in Egypt’s telecom landscape, paving the way for improved connectivity and a seamless user experience for millions nationwide.
