Egypt-Saudi power link project to start trial operations in May 2025 – official

Egypt-Saudi Power interconnection project is scheduled to begin its first trial operations by May 2025, while the official operation will begin in two phases with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts (MW).

The $1.8 billion project will start the first 1,500 GW in June 2025 and the second 1,500 GW will go live in November of the same year, said the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co. CEO, Sabah Mashali on Thursday.

Mashali further said, if there is a surplus of electrical capacities in the line between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, they will be utilised to connect with neighboring countries and export electricity to them.

Masalhi’s statement to Bloomberg came hours after Standard Chartered Bank, in cooperation with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, announced a $566.4 million funding arrangement for Saudi Electricity Company to facilitate the project.

The project has signed in October 2021 were the two countries was awarded the project for three alliances of international and local companies.
