Egypt’s PM launches first public bike-sharing system ahead of COP27

Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has launched on Thursday the first phase of Cairo Bike project as the first public bike-sharing system that considers a real step towards a clean environment, coinciding country’s preparations to host the Climate Change Conference (COP27).

The project had implemented in cooperation between Cairo governorate, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and the Swiss Drosos Foundation.

The first phase of the project includes 250 bicycles distributed across 26 stations. In each station includes two workers to familiarise citizens with the steps to use the bikes and a training programme will be conducted to drive the bikes.

The mobile application will allow the riders a rent value starting from one Egyptian pound per hour or up to eight pounds per day.

Moreover, the riders can register through www.cairobike.net for an annual membership at 600 pounds, while for secondary and university students it will be reduced to 400 pounds.

The project’s purposes are to decrease dependence on private cars and taxis, and reduce overcrowding in the downtown area.
