Egypt seeks to fast-track Harmattan gas field to boost domestic supply

Egypt is seeking to accelerate the development of the offshore Harmattan gas field in the Mediterranean, which is expected to produce about 200 million cubic feet per day and help support domestic supplies, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy said Sunday.

Badawy ordered officials to study ways to shorten the timetable for connecting the field to existing production facilities during a visit to Pharaonic Petroleum Company’s (PhPC) production site in Port Said, the Petroleum Ministry said in a statement.

The minister directed the company to examine technical solutions and alternatives that could bring Harmattan into production sooner and allow Egypt to tap its gas reserves and production potential.

The field will be connected to the Hapi processing plant through a 50-km pipeline, PhPC Chairman Hossam Zaki said during the visit.

Harmattan is also expected to produce around 4,400 barrels per day of petroleum condensates, Zaki added.

Egypt has been seeking to increase domestic gas production and make greater use of existing infrastructure as it faces rising demand from power generation and other industries.

Badawy also called for the use of the latest drilling and exploration technologies to improve success rates and maximise gas and condensate production, the ministry said.

PhPC achieved 100 per cent of its production target in the 2025/26 fiscal year, Zaki said, while outlining the company’s field development, drilling, and exploration programmes.

The company is also working to strengthen safety standards across its operations, Badawi said, praising oil sector workers for helping maintain gas supplies to power plants and ensuring petroleum products are available in the domestic market.

Enppi is the general contractor for the Harmattan development project, working with Petrojet and Petroleum Marine Services (PMS), according to the ministry.
