Egypt to boost cooperation with U.S. on green hydrogen

Tarek El Molla, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Hero Mostafa Garg, the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Egypt, on Tuesday to enhance collaboration in the areas of oil, gas, hydrogen, and emissions reduction.

In the meeting, El Molla emphasised the strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt, particularly in oil and gas. He noted that American oil firms have been operating in Egypt for years, leading to many recent successes, according to the Egyptian Cabinet.

He also mentioned that the petroleum sector is ramping up oil and gas exploration efforts with foreign companies in Egypt to make more discoveries and supply the energy needed for economic growth.

The minister also mentioned that Egypt is actively diversifying its energy sources and boosting the role of new and renewable energies, notably solar, wind, and low-carbon hydrogen. This is happening alongside meeting the daily essential needs required for developmental activities.

He highlighted the increasing significance of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum as a regional platform promoting collaboration and integration in natural gas, the transitional period’s fuel.

He also mentioned that Egypt is partnering with the U.S. by participating in the global commitment to cut methane emissions, particularly through technologies for reducing emissions, capturing carbon, storing, and using it.

The American Ambassador emphasised Egypt’s significant role in the region, particularly as a key regional energy hub. She attributed this to Egypt’s strategic location and superior infrastructure, which positions it as a global energy market of growing importance.

She also acknowledged the significance of Egypt Energy Show (EGYPS) as a global platform due to the conducive business environment and opportunity for knowledge exchange it offers.
