Egypt to deliver 9.5 GW renewable energy to Europe through undersea cable

Egypt will transport electricity to help Europe impending the energy crisis amid Russia’s war with Ukraine through undersea cable to link 9.5 GW of wind and solar power from northern Egypt to Attica and Greece.

Greece-based Copelouzos Group plans to build a 1,373-km high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission line to connect between Egypt and Greece’s Attica region.

The project had included in the 10-year Development Plan of the European Energy Networks (TYNDP 2022) in October 2021.

The 700 MW cable will facilitate the transmission of 9.5 GW as it will be deployed at a maximum sea depth of 2,527 meters.

The significant increase of using the renewables will reduce greenhouse emissions of the power sector, said the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (Entso-E).

Entso-E added that project will implicate various transmission system technologies, such as AC and DC lines, overhead, underground and submarine transmission lines because of the cable’s extensive length.
