Egypt will launch a pilot electronic system to monitor petroleum product distribution in Port Said on Sunday, November 1, as part of efforts to strengthen oversight and prevent the smuggling and illegal diversion of fuel.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources developed the system in coordination with the Ministries of Interior and Communications and Information Technology to improve governance of petroleum product distribution.
The system will collect fuel supply data through electronic stickers issued by traffic units affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, allowing authorities to track petroleum products throughout the supply chain until they reach final consumers.
The pilot phase will run for one month, giving car owners who have not yet installed the electronic stickers time to regularise their status while ensuring that all vehicle fueling stations in Port Said are covered.
The ministry stressed that the system will not affect petroleum product prices or the quantities supplied to consumers. Instead, it will help identify unusual consumption patterns and support monitoring and inspection activities to improve the efficiency of fuel distribution.
