Egypt to open second phase of East Nile Monorail next month – minister
Egypt will open the second phase of the East Nile Monorail to the public next month, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir said on Wednesday, as the country continues expanding its urban transport network.
The second phase extends from Al-Mashir Tantawi Station to the Stadium Station in Nasr City, further integrating eastern Cairo with the New Capital corridor.
El-Wazir said the new section is part of a broader effort to modernise Egypt’s transport infrastructure and expand sustainable, high-capacity mass transit options.
He added that preparations for the launch are being intensified, including enhanced training programmes for Egyptian operators in cooperation with France’s Alstom, similar to the approach used for the first phase.
The minister said the monorail system is designed to improve connectivity across densely populated districts, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles.
Officials said the expansion is expected to strengthen links between residential neighbourhoods, business districts, and key transport hubs, further integrating the capital’s growing urban and administrative zones.
