Egypt’s daily coronavirus infections decline for 3rd straight day

Egypt reported on Tuesday 1,079 new coronavirus infections and 36 deaths as the number of cases continued to drop for a third straight day, Ahram Online reported on Wednesday.

This brings the total infections to 28,615 and the death toll from the contagion to 1,088, according to the health ministry’s daily bulletin on new coronavirus cases.

The health ministry added that 523 patients have fully recovered and were discharged from isolation hospitals and quarantine facilities. The total number of recoveries from the highly contagious virus now stands at 7,350.

The number of patients whose PCR test results have turned from positive to negative, including complete recoveries, has now reached 8,371, ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

It took 50 days for Egypt to reach the milestone of the first 1,000 infections on 4 April. Last Sunday alone, however, saw 1,536 new cases, the highest single-day rise in infections to date.

The country’s overnight curfew, put in place since March, is to end in mid-June. It’s not yet clear whether it will be renewed.
