Egypt’s Environment Min. leads talks on COP30 participation

Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad held a high-level meeting on Thursday to coordinate national efforts for the country’s participation in the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, as per a Cabinet statement.

Fouad emphasised the importance of inter-ministerial coordination, particularly in updating Egypt’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

She noted that key ministries, including transport, electricity and petroleum, have climate-related targets that must be integrated into the updated plan, expected to be finalised before COP30.

The meeting addressed concerns over declining climate finance, which is crucial for developing nations under the Paris Agreement.

Participants warned that reduced commitments from certain countries could hinder global climate action, exacerbating environmental risks such as droughts, floods, and rising sea levels.

Fouad highlighted the opportunity for developing nations to expand exports to European and African markets, particularly in climate-related sectors.

She also pointed to the potential for Egypt to strengthen its role in the voluntary carbon market, positioning itself as a key exporter of renewable energy and hydrogen to Europe while deepening environmental cooperation with African nations.
