Egypt’s Esmat follows up on localisation of battery, solar tech

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat reviewed progress on projects to localise lithium-ion battery production, photovoltaic cells and rare earth materials, the Cabinet said on Sunday.

Esmat visited the Nuclear Materials Authority’s (NMA) headquarters, where he discussed developments in lithium batteries, biofuels, nuclear ores, rare minerals, black sand, land reclamation and groundwater projects with its chairman, Hamed Mira.

He was also briefed on efforts to maximise the use of rock salt, localise photovoltaic panel and semiconductor production, and produce the first wafer from pure quartz.

The authority reported progress in setting up a data liquefaction centre for aerial survey results, the only such facility in the Middle East outside South Africa, the statement added.

Esmat said the authority plays a vital role in Egypt’s sustainable development plans, citing its contribution to reducing imports, advancing technology transfer, and establishing industrial entities with economic impact. He highlighted ongoing projects in agriculture, mining and mineral wealth, including uranium extraction, yellowcake production and rare earth minerals processing.
