Egypt’s health insurance reaches 5.4m beneficiaries in April – UHIA

Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance Authority (UHIA) reported on Wednesday that the total number of beneficiaries reached around 5.4 million citizens across six governorates as of 30 April 2026.

The registration rate stood at 83.6 per cent of the target population and continues to rise, while around 16 per cent of registrants were classified as unable to afford contributions, highlighting the system’s social protection role.

The authority said the system continues to deliver strong financial and operational performance, reflecting the success of the Universal Health Insurance System and its ability to expand coverage while maintaining financial sustainability.

Total revenues reached 281.3 billion Egyptian pounds, up 49 per cent, while accumulated surplus stood at 220.3 billion pounds, up 43 per cent. Investments and cash balances totalled about 189.1 billion pounds, rising 46 per cent, reflecting efficient financial management and sustained resource growth.

Actual performance exceeded actuarial and budget targets, confirming the robustness of the system’s financial framework and its ability to meet current and future obligations.

Contracted healthcare providers reached 582 entities, with private-sector providers accounting for 35 per cent and other entities 16 per cent, supporting broader service diversity. Claims paid outside the Healthcare Authority represented 21 per cent of total settlements in the first half of FY2025/2026, reflecting growing private and civil sector participation.

The ratio of total revenues to claims reached 72.5 per cent, above the projected 66.6 per cent, while collection efficiency for contributions exceeded 85 per cent since launch, according to Egypt’s Central Auditing Organisation. The UHIA said these indicators confirm the system’s financial sustainability and continued capacity for expansion.
