EU unemployment down in Q3 ’24

The European labour market saw significant transitions in the third quarter of 2024, according to newly released data on labour market flows.
Between the second and third quarters, 3.1 million unemployed individuals aged 15-74 in the EU, representing 23.4 per cent of all unemployed in Q2 2024, secured employment.

Meanwhile, 6.7 million unemployed individuals (50.6 per cent) remained without work, and 3.4 million (26.0 per cent) exited the labour force altogether.

The data, published in the latest labour market flows report, also tracked movements among the employed and those outside the labour force. Of those employed in Q2 2024, 2.6 million (1.3 per cent) became unemployed in Q3 2024, while 5.0 million (2.4 per cent) transitioned out of the labour force.

Conversely, individuals classified as out of the labour force in Q2 2024 also displayed notable mobility. Of this group, 4.7 million (4.1 per cent) entered employment in Q3 2024, and 3.9 million (3.3 per cent) transitioned into unemployment.
