France’s Mont-Saint-Michel abbey celebrates 1,000th birthday
France’s spectacular and admired by many abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel has turned 1,000 years old. The abbey is considered a millennial of UNESCO World Heritage site and a key Normandy tourist attraction sight.
The abbey will celebrate with exhibits, concerts, and dance shows until November. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the abbey on Monday, comparing the abbey that stood strong for a millennium to the French resilience and resistance.
The abbey is managed by the French Centre des monuments nationaux (Centre of National Monuments.)
In 2010 it welcomed more than 1.335 million visitors, becoming the most visited cultural site in France. The abbey attracted 1.3 million visitors in 2022.
