Greece evacuates tourists from Rhodes Island due to land fires

Greek authorities forced to evacuate thousands of tourists from their hotels due to a wildfire on Rhodes Island, as about 10,000 tourists have been transported safely to the northern part of the island on Saturday.

Thousands of people were relocated as flames threatened homes and hotels — many spent the night on beaches and streets, according to the Rhodes Hotels Federation.

A further 1,200 will be evacuated from three villages – Pefki, Lindos and Kalathos, Greece’s fire service told the BBC. However, no injuries have been reported, according to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection in Greece.

Private boats, five helicopters, and 173 firefighters were operating to pick up people from beaches on the east of the island. Greek navy vessels were also reported to be heading to the area, which is popular with tourists.
