The Indonesian government may postpone the planned increase of the value-added tax (VAT) to 12 per cent, which was initially scheduled for January 1, 2025, following widespread public opposition to the proposed increase.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Head of the National Economic Council, stated on Wednesday that the hike will likely be postponed due to weak economic conditions. He stressed the importance of providing economic stimulus packages to support those with reduced purchasing power.
“A new economic stimulus must be provided to the public before the hike is implemented,” Pandjaitan noted, but did not specify how long the delay would last.
