Jordan’s agricultural producer price index dropped by 17.9 per cent by the end of the third quarter of 2024, reaching 108.9 points, compared to 132.7 points in the same period of 2023, according to the Department of Statistics.
The fall was due to lower prices for key crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, and bananas, which together make up 40 per cent of the index. On the other hand, prices for crops like potatoes, zucchini, eggplants, and cucumbers increased, contributing 60 per cent to the index.
Month-on-month (MoM), the agricultural producer price index rose by 1.2 per cent in September 2024, reaching 100.2 points, compared to 99.0 points in September 2023.
Moreover, the department noted that the rise was driven by increased prices for grapes, green corn, olives, potatoes, and strawberries, which accounted for 55.5 per cent of the index commodities. Meanwhile, prices for tomatoes, green cabbage, sweet peppers, green onions, and cauliflower dropped, impacting 44.5 per cent of the index.
The department also observed a 0.9 per cent drop in the index from August to September 2024, falling from 101.2 points to 100.2 points. This decrease stemmed from lower prices for tomatoes, figs, spinach, pomegranates, and cauliflower, which made up 53.6 per cent of the measured commodities. However, prices for strawberries, pomelos, zucchini, yellow peaches, and green onions rose, making up 46.4 per cent of the total index.
