Roadside bomb kills two policemen in North Sinai

A roadside bomb killed two Egyptian policemen on Sunday as they were travelling in an armoured vehicle in Al-Arish in North Sinai, the interior ministry has said.

The men killed included a police officer and a police conscript. Three other police conscripts were injured in the incident.

Al-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai, is the epicentre of a mounting Islamist insurgency.

Militant attacks in Sinai, primarily targeting security forces, have increased since the 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against his rule.

An Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State group, Sinai Province, has claimed responsibility for the deadliest attacks in the country since.

The group was formerly known as Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis but changed its name when it pledged allegiance to IS last November.

In July the group launched a series of coordinated assaults on security forces in North Sinai which killed 21 troops, the bloodiest in months..
