Sisi heads to Sudan to attend Bashir’s Inauguration

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi travelled to Khartoum on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Sudanese President Omar Bashir.

Bashir, who came to power in 1989, won more than 94 percent of the vote in the April presidential elections, extending his presidency for a further five years.

Nearly all major opposition parties boycotted the polls.

El-Sisi has visited Khartoum several times since coming to power, most recently in March when he met with Bashir and Hailemariam Desalegn, the prime minister of Ethiopia, for tripartite talks on Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam.

A spokesman for El-Sisi said at the time that the summit ushered in a “new phase of cooperation” between Egypt and Sudan.

In 2009 Bashir was indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the Darfur conflict.

El-Sisi is set to travel to Germany and then Hungary later this week.
