Young photojournalist Esraa El Taweel released due to her medical condition

Cairo Criminal Court has ordered Saturday the release of Egyptian photographer Israa El-Taweel after nearly seven months in detention pending trial.

Judge Hassan Fareed made press statements saying El-Taweel was released because of her medical condition and her need for medication outside prison. He added that El-Taweel will be under police supervision and is not allowed to leave her home without police permission.

El-Taweel is to be tried on charges of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, from which hails Egypt’s ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, spreading false information to tarnish the country’s image, and hindering public safety.

The 23-year-old photographer was injured when she was shot in January 2014 during clashes in Mostafa Mahmoud Square. She walks with crutches, in circulated pictures.

A campaign was launched in June reporting the disappearance of the freelance photographer who was found weeks later when the interior ministry announced she had been arrested.
