Egyptian film Hamlet from the Slums competes at Malmö Arab Film Festival

Egyptian movie, Hamlet from the Slums is among 13 films from 14 countries participating in the grant programme, the movies are competing for cash awards at the ninth Malmö Industry Days (MID).

Hamlet from the Slums had been selected among 16 other projects to participate in the Cannes Film Festival’s L’Atelier programme.

The film received awards during the fourth edition of El-Gouna Film Festival (2020) these include; $20,000 from Shahid, $10,000 from Sparkle Media Services.

In addition to that it received the Film Independent and U.S. Embassy Virtual Residency award, and the Khaled Bichara Award for Egyptian Independent Filmmakers.

The movie is produced by Ahmed Amer, who was invited to participate in the 2021 Rotterdam Lab. The film stars Ahmed Dash as the lead character who is an 18-year-old boy called Ahmed, who lives in a Cairo slum and is threatened by brutal urban renewal.

MID is currently in its 13th edition, which kicked off on 28 April and continues until 4 May. The movie has been chosen to participate in three categories which are the short films in development, feature fiction films in development, and feature documentaries in development.

Hamlet from the Slums is a co-production among Egyptian producer Ahmed Amer, who also co-wrote the script, the Swedish producer Erik Andersson, as well as contributions of other producers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon and France.
