Egypt’s new Bashteel railway station nears completion

Egypt’s New Bashteel railway station in Giza is now almost complete, according to the project manager Engineer Hussein Shahata on Wednesday.

The station hold a central railway terminal spanning over 31,000 square metres, with railway tracks covering 164,000 square metres.

The terminal connects a number of railway lines, such as High Dam, Alexandria, Imbaba, El Manashi and El Qubari.

This make the station a perfect choice to  be the city’s main rail terminal to access Upper Egypt. The station is also located near the third metro line, the monorail and the bus service.

It can be easily accessed for those wanting to travel via rail, and for travellers arriving from Upper Egypt to head to Cairo’s medical and administrative services.

The station is Egypt’s largest railway station, designed by architect Fouad Mahmoud. It holds a 40-metre tall glass pyramid which allows the sunlight to flood the main hall.

There are also references to the lotus flower and obelisks in the main hall serving as elevators.

The Bashteel station is expected to accommodate up to 250,000 passengers a day. The project is also set to ease the crowds at Downtown Cairo’s Ramses Station.
