ArcelorMittal, MHI operate pilot carbon capture unit in Belgium

ArcelorMittal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and partners announced on Tuesday the start of a pilot carbon dioxide capture unit at ArcelorMittal’s Gent steel plant in Belgium, according to Reuters.

This project, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from steel production, which contributes 7–9 per cent of global CO2 emissions, began in 2022 with partners BHP and Mitsubishi Development.

The pilot unit will operate for 1–2 years to assess the feasibility of scaling up the technology. ArcelorMittal is facilitating the trial, with MHI providing its carbon capture technology.

BHP and Mitsubishi Development are funding the trial with the ambition of achieving carbon-free steelmaking processes, according to ArcelorMittal Belgium CEO Manfred Van Vlierberghe.
