Egypt has been ranked 65th globally and 7th among Arab nations in the Government Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness Index for 2022, as reported by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). The country is second in Africa, following Mauritius.
Significant advancements in AI were noted, with Egypt improving seven positions in the AI index published by Tortoise Media in 2023 and advancing 17 positions in the skill-related AI index by mid-2023. Approximately 246 specialised AI companies operate in Egypt in 2023.
Egypt developed an AI application for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy in 2023 with over 95 per cent accuracy.
The CAPMAS report further highlights a 185 per cent increase in scientific publications from 2010 to 2020 and a 101.6 per cent rise in trademark applications from 2010 to 2021. The number of researchers per million people grew from 492.4 to 838, while R&D spending as a percentage of GDP increased from 0.4 to 0.9 per cent.
Exports of computers and communications rose from 0.1 to 2.9 per cent of service exports between 2010 and 2021. Meanwhile, student enrollment in communication and information technology programmes grew from 36,500 to 43,100 between 2017 and 2021, with graduates rising from 128,900 to 210,900.
These findings underscore Egypt’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence and technology.
