New car sales in the European Union (EU) fell by 2.6 per cent in January 2025, with major markets posting declines, including France, Italy, and Germany, while Spain saw a rise, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported on Tuesday.
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales surged 34 per cent, capturing a 15 per cent market share. Germany led growth, followed by Belgium and the Netherlands. Hybrid-electric vehicle registrations rose 18.4 per cent, reaching a 34.9 per cent market share, as demand grew in France and Spain.
Plug-in hybrid sales declined 8.5 per cent, driven by sharp drops in Belgium and France. Meanwhile, petrol car registrations plummeted 18.9 per cent, with steep declines in France and Germany. Diesel sales also fell 27 per cent, reducing its market share to 10 per cent.
