World Bank approves $600m for Morocco’s social, climate resilience reforms
The World Bank has approved a $600 million financing package for the final phase of Morocco’s Strengthening Human Capital for a Resilient Morocco programme. The initiative aims to bolster health coverage, expand social protection, and enhance climate risk management.
The funding builds on previous support approved in 2022 and 2023, which helped implement universal health coverage and social assistance programmes. Currently, 75 per cent of the population has health insurance, but gaps remain, particularly for non-salaried workers. The Direct Social Benefits Programme, overseen by the National Social Support Agency, will target up to 60 per cent of the population lacking family allowances.
The reforms also aim to improve disaster risk management, benefiting climate-vulnerable groups like farmers. The World Bank emphasised the programme’s role in making Morocco’s social protection system more comprehensive and equitable.
