Egypt secures natural gas supplies during peak summer demand – minister

Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources successfully secured the full natural gas requirements of the local market during the recent peak consumption period, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said. The move came amid a sharp rise in temperatures and ensured stable fuel supplies to all sectors, particularly the electricity sector.

Badawi made the remarks during his inspection of the National Advanced Transmission and Automation Centre (NATA) Control Centre, where he reviewed the network’s operating indicators and the status of fuel supplies to power generation plants, which recorded their highest consumption levels during the current summer season.

The minister said the natural gas system’s ability to handle record demand levels reflects the efficiency of Egypt’s gas infrastructure, the flexibility of its operations, and the effectiveness of the ministry’s proactive plan for the summer period.

The plan included maximising domestic natural gas production, securing additional supplies through floating regasification units, and maintaining continuous coordination with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies.

Badawi also reviewed preparations to meet demand during the second half of the summer and contingency measures designed to address potential changes, stressing that the ministry continues to implement programmes aimed at improving the efficiency of the natural gas system and strengthening energy security.

He added that these efforts aim to ensure sustainable and efficient gas supplies for citizens and various economic sectors while keeping pace with the expected increase in energy demand in the coming period.
