Trump to sign orders supporting coal industry

US President Donald Trump is set to sign executive orders on Tuesday to support the nation’s coal industry, sources told Reuters. The orders, aimed at reversing regulations affecting coal, will direct the Interior and Energy Departments to take steps to aid the sector, including efforts to prevent the closure of at-risk coal plants.

The move comes amid rising US power demand, driven by sectors like artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EV), and cryptocurrencies. Although coal remains a major emitter of greenhouse gases, its use has declined significantly in recent years due to stricter regulations and the growth of natural gas, solar, and wind energy. Trump, who campaigned on boosting US energy output, is expected to sign the orders at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) at the White House.
