Egypt’s Navy receives EU-funded search and rescue boats

Egyptian Navy has received three SAR-1700-class search and rescue boats as part of a joint cooperation programme between Egypt, the European Union, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), aimed at enhancing the combat capabilities of Egypt’s Navy. The vessels were officially commissioned with the hoisting of the Egyptian flag, marking their entry into active service amid a broader technological upgrade of naval systems to international standards.

During the handover ceremony, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Navy Vice Admiral Mahmoud Fawzy highlighted that the delivery underscores the strategic partnership between Egypt, the EU, and the IOM. He affirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to strengthening the naval fleet’s capabilities to support security and stability across areas of naval operations.

The SAR-1700-class boats are among the most advanced units for search and rescue operations and represent a significant addition to Egypt’s naval assets.

The ceremony was attended by several senior Egyptian naval commanders, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner, EU Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst, and Chief of the IOM Mission in Egypt Carlos Oliver, along with other EU officials.
