French PM opens door to referendum on cost-cutting measures

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has raised the possibility of holding a national referendum on the country’s budget amid concerns that proposed cost-cutting measures could lead to widespread protests.

In an interview with Journal du Dimanche cited by Reuters, Bayrou stated that the issue was too significant to be left to experts alone, suggesting that it should be put to the citizens for a decision.

The government is facing the challenge of reducing France’s debt burden while avoiding backlash from trade unions and workers, particularly regarding fears of major public sector job cuts. Bayrou emphasised that, under the French constitution, a referendum could be called by the president upon the government’s proposal.

President Emmanuel Macron had previously hinted at using referendums for key decisions, although the specific issues were not clarified. Bayrou’s comments come as opposition parties threaten to bring down his government over the budget, which is expected to require billions of euros in savings.
