Egyptian potato exports have soared past 1 million tons so far this season, marking a record year-on-year increase and reflecting rising global demand for the country’s agricultural produce, the Ministry of Agriculture said Tuesday.
Exports reached 1.081 million tons, up from 832,000 tons in the same period last year, according to data from the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine.
Russia was the top buyer, importing over 351,000 tons, followed by the European Union with 331,000 tons, and Arab countries with 315,000 tons. Other international markets accounted for 83,000 tons.
“This leap highlights the competitiveness and quality of Egyptian potatoes in global markets,” Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk said in a statement. He credited the increase to efforts by farmers, exporters, and quarantine officials to meet international standards and open new markets.
The minister also praised the Agricultural Quarantine Authority, the Brown Rot Control Project, and other ministry bodies for their role in strengthening Egypt’s agricultural export system.
Egypt has been expanding its agricultural export base in recent years, aiming to boost foreign exchange revenues and solidify its position as a leading supplier of fresh produce.
